Family Room Addition:

During excavation we discovered many, many rocks, so we decided to put them to good use – the larger stones were used as accents in the landscaping, and the smaller stones were recycled for use in the exterior finishes of the addition. We unearthed so many rocks during the job that the clients named their property "Stony Hill Farm," finally finding a name that fit their home after years of searching.

Below are pictures of the existing sunroom during the initial stages of demolition and a picture of the excavation area.

We installed a drainage line in a large crushed stone bed before the concrete was poured to avoid any future water problems in the new basement.  The foundation walls were made of poured concrete brought in by a pump truck.

We had to properly support, or “underpin” the existing foundation before we could pour the concrete floor.  This is slowly done in stages where sections of earth are carefully removed from under the existing home and then replaced with poured concrete walls.

On the left is a picture of the frames we used to pour each section. On the right, the finished wall is visible on the left side of the picture.

Once the extensive foundation work was completed, we started framing and the structure began to take shape.

During framing we constructed a custom cupola, capped with a standing seam copper roof. This created a distinctive detail on the home and provided an inlet for natural sunlight.  Copper roofing was also used on the new porch roof to carry the detail throughout the project.

The exterior was finished in stucco with a stone detail to match the existing home.  In order to better match the existing stonework, we took some of the local stones found on site, had them cleavered and reused them on the addition.

Mark,

I hope you had a great summer!  It is hard to believe that at about this time last year, Roddy and I were finalizing our plans with our architect for our new addition and wondering how we were going to move all of our furniture from the sun room!  And now we continue to enjoy our new addition as we have all summer – thanks to you, Bob and the gang for keeping us on schedule!  We enjoyed many margaritas on the back porch!

We want to thank you and Bob for not only great work but also your professionalism and communication.  We are thrilled with our addition and would not have done anything differently.  Roddy is still in awe at how Green Gate dug the foundation for the basement and the kids have really put it to use.  We also are thankful that you were able to come up with sound solutions on the few occasions in which our architect made a mistake.  I personally love the cupola and porch and love the “uplighting” Bob recommended!

As you know, we have more projects in the pipeline and we will let you know as soon as we are ready to dive back into construction.  Thank you again for everything!

Dana M.
